His Royal Highness, Lawan Ahmed Mohammed, Ph.D, the 17th Emir of Gumel, is a distinguished scholar, cybersecurity and technology expert, academic leader, researcher, and public servant whose career represents a remarkable convergence of traditional leadership, international scholarship, technological innovation, and service to humanity.

He is the eldest son of the late His Royal Highness, Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, CON, the 16th Emir of Gumel, and was raised within the rich traditions and values of the Gumel Emirate. His upbringing instilled in him the principles of discipline, humility, wisdom, responsibility, justice, and service to the people.

His accession to the throne as the 17th Emir of Gumel ushers in a new chapter in the history of the historic Gumel Emirate. Academic distinction

His Royal Highness has received advanced academic training from leading institutions in Nigeria, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. His academic qualifications include: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Computer & Communication Systems Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia; Master of Science (MSc), Computing, De Montfort University, United Kingdom; Master of Science (MSc), Operations Research, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia, and Bachelor of Science (BSc), Mathematics, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

His multidisciplinary academic background combines mathematics, computing, operations research, computer engineering, and communication systems, providing a strong foundation for his contributions to technology, cybersecurity, digital identity, research, and higher education.

Academic and international career

His Royal Highness has enjoyed a distinguished academic career in both Africa and abroad. He served at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak, where he was engaged in teaching and research, including work in smartcard technology and digital identity systems.

He later spent more than twelve years in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he served as Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Hafr Al-Batin.

In that capacity, he contributed significantly to curriculum development, academic quality enhancement, faculty development, institutional advancement, and international accreditation. He also played a leading role in the university’s ABET accreditation efforts, supporting the alignment of computing and engineering programmes with internationally recognised standards.

National service and cybersecurity leadership

His Royal Highness has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation and cybersecurity ecosystem.

He currently serves as Director of CyberSecurity at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), where he provides strategic leadership in matters relating to cybersecurity, digital trust, cyber resilience, capacity development, and the protection of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

His professional responsibilities and areas of contribution include Strategic leadership in national cybersecurity initiatives; Cybersecurity incident response and national cyber resilience; Development and strengthening of digital-trust infrastructure; Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and secure digital services; Cybersecurity awareness and capacity development, Protection of digital systems and critical information infrastructure; and National and international cooperation in cybersecurity.

Through his professional engagements, His Royal Highness has contributed to Nigeria’s participation in major regional and international cybersecurity platforms, including AfricaCERT, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), OIC-CERT, ECOWAS, and ANCA.

Research, publications and intellectual contribution

His Royal Highness is an accomplished researcher with scholarly interests and contributions spanning computer systems, cybersecurity, digital identity, information technology, communication systems, and technological innovation.

He has authored and co-authored more than 40 research publications and contributed to books and book chapters, establishing a strong record of intellectual contribution and knowledge dissemination.

His academic career reflects a sustained commitment to using research, education, and technology to address contemporary challenges and develop human capacity.
